In order to study the influence of nutrients on the growth characteristics of the dominant dinoflagellates, Ceratium furca and Ceratium fusus, in the temperate coastal area of Sagami Bay, Japan, we conducted field monitoring from January 2000 to December 2005 and performed laboratory culture experiments.

Ceratium is a genus of the phlyum Dinoflagellata.

The dinoflagellate Ceratium does not have the characteristic shape of other dinoflagellates. Shaped like an anchor (up to 2 mm long), it can have two or three horns emerging from the cell body – always with two from the top and possibly with one from the bottom.

Ceratium characteristics

Most species of Ceratium are unicellular organisms that are characterized by their armored plates, two flagella, and horns. Species of Ceratium are found worldwide and are of concern due to their blooms. Ceratium [ref. ID; 1618] Body flattened; with one anterior and one to four posterior horn-like processes; often large; chromatophores yellow, brown, or greenish; color variation conspicuous; fission is said to take place at night and in the early morning; fresh or salt water.

Dinoflagellates are mostly marine but also found in freshwater. Their distribution is related to the temperature, pH and depth; Dinoflagellates are unicellular having a eukaryotic cell; They can be red, blue, green, yellow or brown depending on the pigment present in the cell eter (Dolan et al., 2002).

However, there is a paucity of data on ecological parameters of C. furca blooms in Asian coastal areas, although ecological and physiological characteristics of Ceratium species have been examined by Baek et al. (Baek et al., 2008a, b, c). Most dinoflagellates have a constant vertical migration pattern and cell division timing.
